Halfway Up
This artwork depicts a view I came across when walking up Mt Sunday in Canterbury. Everyone else in the party strode on ahead to look at other things, but I became captivated by all the contrasts in the landscape – the mountains, rock formations, river flats and a small ox-bow lake in the foreground. I sat down to sketch as I watched the rest of my walking party become small figures on the distant slope.
The artwork is also a reflection on perseverance and seeing a journey through. This became quite literal when I hit a creative road block halfway through carving this lino block. So not only is it ‘halfway up’ Mount Sunday, but it became an artwork of two halves too when I had to find the determination to persevere on my own creative journey.
The poem “Halfway Down” by AA Milne has always struck a chord with me, and these words were running through my head when I found such a perfect stopping place to sketch.
