Glass Jungle
I have always been captivated by the large glasshouses that feature in many public botanic gardens. Their soaring cathedral-like ceilings and the variety of unusual plant life transports you to another world. This interior view of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens Glasshouse (Cuningham House) contrasts the lush foliage with the hard angles and lines of the steel framework.
This artwork features an unusual mix of printmaking and collage techniques. The colours of the collage elements are first printed by hand onto fine Japanese washi paper. These washi papers are then cut carefully to shape with a scalpel before being adhered to the cotton rag paper with a binder. The final step is to print the inked linocut plate on top of the collage elements. The process involves careful planning and a huge amount of patience to ensure all the elements line up to create one cohesive image.
