Flying Around?

This artwork highlights nine birds classified as nationally critical from New Zealand’s list of endangered species. Unfortunately there are more species on this list than those depicted (if only the list were shorter). I chose these particular species for their interesting appearance, the story behind their survival, or the story behind their decline.

There are some native bird species that are frequently depicted by New Zealand artists. For example the Tui, Kereru and Piwakawaka. I myself have created artworks with these very beautiful birds in them. However, this time around I wanted to draw attention to some of the lesser known, but no less worthy bird species.

I hope you enjoy their different characters as much as I have enjoyed getting to know these species while creating each hand-carved block and print. With my nose up close to the lino while carving in such detail I became quite attached to each bird and I have certainly enjoyed starting to learn more about them.
